Dr. Joella utilizes a specific and thorough spinal analysis and examination to determine overall spinal function and location of subluxations (see About Chiropractic for more info). She utilizes numerous manual and instrument techniques when adjusting spinal and extremity joints of all ages. In addition to four years of chiropractic school, earning her doctorate in the field, she has spent two additional years studying maternity and pediatric chiropractic care. She has earned a fellowship with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and a Certification from the Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics in the Academy of Chiropractic Family Practice. She is also certified in the Webster Technique (see chiropractic for pregnancy for more info).

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a form of health care that focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.

Doctors of chiropractic use controlled forces, called adjustments, to correct subluxations. A subluxation is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves stem from the spinal cord and are located between each of the bones in your spine. This irritation of the nerves can cause interference with the signals traveling over those nerves, leading to dysfunction in other areas of the body. Subluxations occur when the amount of stress (physical, chemical, and/or emotional) exceeds the body's ability to adapt. This stored stress in the body becomes tension in the muscles and joints, altering motion and leading to subluxations. By correcting subluxations, chiropractors assist in restoring and maintaining normal motion and function of vertebral joints.

How do subluxations affect you?

Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If you interfere with the signals traveling over nerves, parts of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their innate abilities. In other words, not only will misaligned bones sometimes create pain in the area, it can create dysfunction in other areas of your body and affect your overall quality of life.

A chiropractor is the only health practitioner qualified in assessing the spine for subluxations. Chiropractic personalizes care to help create the potential for well-being and improve the quality of life, rather than just focusing on illness. Chiropractic adjustments are specifically tailored to every individual depending on their age, strength, and size.

Dr. Joella utilizes a specific and thorough examination to determine overall spinal function and location of subluxations. She has been trained in numerous chiropractic adjusting techniques and utilizes various manual, drop table and instrument adjustments depending on the individual needs of each client.

Studies suggest that women who receive regular chiropractic care during pregnancy experience more comfortable pregnancies and have faster and less complicated deliveries. Studies have also found that there are no negative side-effects associated with chiropractic care during pregnancy.

Hormonal changes, loosened joints and weight gain increases the likelihood of becoming subluxated. A subluxation is a misaligned bone that causes joint dysfunction and may lead to nervous system dysfunction.

Chiropractic provided by a doctor trained in pregnancy care, can often alleviate the symptoms and dysfunction associated with the following conditions:

  • Sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Pubic symphysis dysfunction
  • Low back/pelvic pain
  • Round ligament syndrome
  • Fetal malposition (i.e. breech, transverse, oblique, posterior)

Along with the above conditions, Dr. Joella has also had success in helping to alleviate the symptoms and dysfunction associated with pre-term labor and mild to moderate morning sickness.

As a parent, we all want our children to be healthy and live up to their unique potential. Although there are many things that come together to create optimal health, proper communication between your child's brain and body, through optimal spine and nervous system function, is essential for optimal development and function.

During birth, the spine (particularly the neck) becomes compressed, rotated and stretched. Even uncomplicated, natural childbirth can be one of the most traumatic events of your child's life. Modern obstetric birth with its numerous interventions only increases the trauma and likelihood of spinal injuries. Although birth subluxations may cause immediate symptoms, such as respiratory distress, colic or nursing difficulties, there may also be long-term consequences to the precious nervous system.

Spinal problems that go undetected or neglected in childhood become more serious problems in adults. Spinal adjustments are specifically tailored to meet the child's size and range from a gentle concentrated pressure to a light gentle impulse that looks vaguely similar to a typical adult chiropractic adjustment. Don't leave your children at home to develop the same problems that you have. Act now!

"My son was born with a rare type of Leukemia and two heart defects. He had to be hospitalized almost weekly for blood platelet transfusions and because of respiratory problems. After we started receiving care I noticed almost immediate results. His blood counts improved; his red cell counts went up and white cells went down. No more platelets transfusions! His immune system seemed stronger and her had fewer colds. My health improved as well- I felt less stressed and didn't get sick for almost an entire year. I was grateful for the exercise and nutrition advice offered by Joella. I felt like she was really concerned with helping us feel our best. I was skeptical about chiropractic care at first and thought I didn't have the time for it but I am so glad I gave it a chance. I wish I had sought care sooner."

"My midwife discovered that my baby was breech and I was getting close to my last month gestation. I was told about JP Chiropractic and that Joella does a special kind of adjustment. I have been to several chiropractors over the past 15 years. Joella was the first Dr. that took longer than 5 minutes with me. She was very thorough with her work and the baby moved into proper position. It takes lots of things to have a healthy body, fitness, proper nutrition, good rest but if your body doesn't work properly no matter what you do in these areas you won't be able to enjoy your healthy lifestyle. Chiropractic care is just one more smart way to taking care of yourself."

"I don't know where to start when talking about Joella Pettigrew. I became a patient shortly after I discovered I was pregnant with twins. This was my 5th pregnancy, but the prospect of carrying twins frightened me. With Joella's help I can honestly say that those 11 ½ pounds of babies were easier to carry than the approximately 7 lbs of each of my earlier babies. I had experienced very painful sciatica with earlier pregnancies, but never more than a twinge this time around. On at least one occasion I winced into the office, barely able to walk, and came out walking freely.

But the really amazing thing happened after my babies were born. They arrived 7 weeks early and one was having difficulties breathing. He was on a c-pap or pressurized oxygen machine. On the fourth day, Joella was able to come up to the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit where he was. She gently adjusted his tiny little body and that night they were able to take him off the c-pap and switch to a nasal canula. Joella was again able to make the almost hour long trip to see my son in the hospital. She once more adjusted him and that night they took him off the oxygen entirely. I was and am so grateful for the help Joella provided me and my son. She is truly a remarkable person."
